Facebook has issued a new update regarding its fight against election meddling, fake news, and disinformation. According to the announcement, the company is “in regular” touch with the law enforcement agencies, other companies across the globe, and even “outside experts”.
Facebook claimed that the investigation in this matter along with partnerships across the world has helped the company remove 82 pages from its platform before October 26. The update from the company also indicated that fresh information from law enforcement helped the company shut down more accounts that were likely to “be linked to foreign entities”.
To give concrete statistics about the situation, Facebook revealed that its “early-stage investigation” helped the company identify “around 30” accounts on Facebook and 85 accounts on Instagram. The parameter here seems to be based on “coordinated inauthentic behavior”. As a result, the company blocked all the accounts in question, and it is currently investigating the accounts in more detail. Facebook also noted that all the Facebook Pages that were associated with the 30 accounts are in Russian or French languages. Details about blocked Instagram accounts indicate that they are “mostly” in the English language with differing targets.

According to the information, some of the banned Instagram accounts were focusing on celebrities while others were focused on debate related to politics. The announcement came hours before the mid-term elections. Facebook clarified that it was not done with the investigation but it wanted the public to know that it has taken actions against attempts to meddle in the upcoming elections.
Facebook further revealed that it will continue to analyze the accounts and concluded the update by stating that it will share more information after the investigation is concluded.
