Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has filed a trademark for ‘Vive Cosmos’ at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The trademark first spotted by Dutch site Mobielkopen does not have an exact description of what the name refers to but it does seen to be related to a “head mounted display for computer simulated reality”.
There are also other accompanying descriptions like ‘eye pieces for head mounted displays’ and ‘handheld controllers for use in computer simulated reality environment’. The trademark filing comes after the company started roll out of its Vive Focus standalone headset to businesses this month. This filing, however, could mean the company is working on other products as well.
According to UploadVR, the description seems related to virtual reality and makes one wonder if this could be related to a new VR headset. Perhaps, we might be looking at the successor to the Vive Pro or it could be a new branding for the Vive Focus, which is slated to get support for six degrees of freedom controllers that leaked earlier this month.
HTC is a leader, of sorts, in the virtual reality industry and its technology has been found to be far superior than rivals in certain applications. There is a possibility that HTC might be working on a new PC-based Vive that takes advantage company’s new inside-out tracking tech and challenge the rumored Rift S from Facebook’s Oculus.
The report claims that it could only be a new tech to accommodate Valve’s new SteamVR tech like the Knuckles controllers. One interesting element about this trademark is that the listing is related to ‘computer peripherals for mobile devices for remotely accessing and transmitting data’ suggesting that this new product could be linked to wireless VR.

The listing also means that we could see new product arrive during this New Year. The company has used CES as a stage in the past to showcase new devices and we might see the successor to Vive Pro at CES 2019 in January.
