Huawei’s future smartphone patent reveals hidden in-display front camera

Similar to Samsung, Oppo and LG, now Huawei also intends to bring bezel-less phone with no-notch and under-display camera in future smartphones. The Chinese electronics major has been granted a patent by USPTO that showcases a full edge-to-edge display with a hidden front-facing selfie camera and in-display earpiece.

Huawei submitted patent application back in September 2016, and USPTO published the patent on its website database on November 6, 2018. As seen in the supplied illustration images, upcoming Huawei phones are expected to feature a very thin earpiece slit in the display, but it doesn’t show any hole for the front camera.

It is assumed that Huawei will include selfie camera lens hidden within the earpiece slit. There seems to be a cutout for the 3.5mm headphone jack port on top and what appears to be USB-C port at the bottom-edge.

The concept illustration, which is expected to be of Huawei P30 series, shows a curved back body with vertical dual rear camera setup and a third cut out in the top-center. The third cut-out could also meant for a triple camera setup, if not a physical fingerprint reader. Its power button and volume controllers are seen placed on the right edge.

Recently, Oppo was granted patent for an under-display camera module by World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The patent described a full-screen smartphone with a camera under the display, and it can contain a single hole or two for selfie cameras. As seen in the patent documentation, the screen will be divided into two parts. The upper part housing of the phone will have a display with a flexible polymer layer and a low refresh rate, which will help in high-quality images because if the screen continues to refresh, the lens will experience problems.

Similarly, Samsung and LG have also developed a new way to incorporate the front camera under the display. This is seen as a big technology breakthrough for developing smartphones with edge-to-edge display design without including a notch.
