Chinese smartphone maker Realme, formerly a subsidiary of Oppo, has had a fairly successful first few months, having captured the attention of the Indian buying public. It all started with the Realme 1, which was launched in May this year, and is interestingly still on sale at Rs 10,490 for the 4GB/64GB option even though the company has launched newer options. Early buyers of the phone now have a reason to be happy, as Realme has announced a big software update for the Realme 1.
The phone is now receiving a stable update for ColorOS 5.2, the custom UI developed for Oppo and Realme phones. There are many new features also being introduced with the update, along with the October Android security patch. Perhaps the only somewhat disappointing aspect of this announcement is that it isn’t a core Android update for Android 9 Pie; the Realme 1 remains on Android 8.1 Oreo for the time being.
Some of the key new features include one-swipe dismiss for notifications, headset icon and other improvements to the status bar, new desktop icons, smart bar for seamless multi-tasking and a dedicated ‘Game Space’ that provides better performance and mutes notifications so you can enjoy your games uninterrupted. The software update will roll out gradually, eventually reaching all active Realme 1 devices.

While the Realme 1 was the company’s first device (then launched as the Oppo Realme 1), the company has since launched more smartphones including the most recent one, the Realme U1. The company is currently focusing on the affordable smartphone space and selling only online, although it recently suggested that it could be looking to expand its distribution strategy to the offline space.
