Xiaomi Redmi 5, Mi 5s MIUI 10 8.11.8 beta updates Android to Oreo

Xiaomi has updated the core version of Android to Oreo for Redmi 5 and Mi 5s with the latest beta version of MIUI 10. This means that the company is working on rolling out the stable version of Android Oreo for both the devices in coming weeks. This information comes days after Xiaomi started rolling out the latest version of MIUI 10, the MIUI 10 version 8.11.8 beta for devices running Global version ROMs.

The new update also brings the anti-rollback protection to both the devices, which means that users can’t roll back to a previous version of MIUI 10 after installing the update with the feature. These updates and beta rollouts are part of testing the latest version of the in-house Android-based skin, MIUI 10.

MIUI update schedule has remained separate from the usual Android update schedule that rest of smartphone makers follow. Xiaomi is quite active in providing new updates for its vast range of smartphone devices. For context, the company plans to roll out MIUI 10 to devices that were launched almost three years back.

To mark the difference between MIUI version updates and Android version updates, one must take into account the difference in how both look at updates. Android version upgrades are the baseline that most device makers follow however with MIUI version updates, Xiaomi does not really care much about core Android OS versions.

Instead, Xiaomi focuses on the features that it introduces with each successive version of MIUI. However, the company does update the core version of Android every once in a while though the updates are relatively delayed than other device makers. This build also brings Google Pixel 3 Nightsight-like ‘Night mode’ to Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and Mi 8.
