Android 9 Pie-based HydrogenOS public beta for OnePlus 5 and 5T is out now

OnePlus has just released the public beta version of its Android 9 Pie-based HydrogenOS for OnePlus 5 and 5T users in the Chinese market. This comes days after a closed beta version of the upcoming system update leaked out on the internet. As previously reported, OnePlus ships its devices with HydrogenOS in China and OxygenOS in the International market. Both the versions of the operating system share common code base with two notable differences, the first being the user interface and the second being the absence of Google services in HydrogenOS. The launch of the public beta version for HydrogenOS means that the company is days away from launching the Open Beta version for OxygenOS.

To recap the changes that the new public beta brings to the software, the device upgrades the core Android operating system from Android 8.1 Oreo to Android 9 Pie. It also introduces the new OnePlus UI to users that the company ships in its latest devices, the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T. Taking a closer look at the HydrogenOS public beta, the size of the ROM file for the OnePlus 5 is 2.04GB and for the 5T is 2.05GB. The download website marks these ROM files as the 21st system update for the OnePlus 5 and 20th update for the 5T.

OnePlus has also made changes to the Emergency rescue UI with changes to the DND (Do Not Disturb) mode. The company has also updated its OnePlus Weather app along with improved accuracy while detecting the location, improved weather data and other bug fixes. This comes right after the company invited users for a closed beta testing program for OnePlus 6T along with a new update for OnePlus 3 and 3T users.
