HMD Global has been rapidly expanding its product portfolio with launch of new devices at Mobile World Congress early this year and follow up devices in the last few months. However, the company is trying to keep the older devices ticking by issuing timely software updates. The Finnish company has commenced the roll out of latest month security patch for Nokia 8, Nokia 6 and Nokia 5, which were launched last year.
The update seems to be rolling out in a staged manner and is available in limited markets right now. Luckily, India is part of that initial supported regions, meaning those using the Nokia 8, Nokia 6 or Nokia 5 can check for software updates and get updated to November security patch. HMD Global has promised to deliver timely software update for all its devices and is trying to deliver on that promise by issuing updates to older devices as well.
Nokia 8, Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 get November Security Patch
Google started roll out of November security patch for its Pixel devices early this month. HMD Global issued the update to some of its newest devices and is finally bringing the update to some older devices as well. The update, being pushed to Nokia 8, Nokia 6 and Nokia 5, only brings the newest security patch. After the update, the security patch status of your smartphone, should get elevated to November 2018.
The reports indicate that all the three devices are getting the update in India. However, in markets like Pakistan and Netherlands, the update is being seeded only to Nokia 8. If you haven’t received the update then you can check for manual update by heading to Settings >> System >> Update. Since this update only brings security patch for the month of November, it weighs only around 109.9MB in download on the Nokia 6. The update size for Nokia 5 and Nokia 8 are even smaller at 103.3MB and 61.8MB respectively.
HMD Global has been among the few Android OEMs to consistently push out monthly security update for its smartphones. At the time of its launch, the company promised that all of its Nokia smartphones running Android will receive at least two years of software support. The company has already pushed Android 9 Pie update for the Nokia 7 plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus and is expected to release updates for Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 by the end of this year.

The security updates for Nokia smartphones amidst reports that Google is mandating its OEM partners to release software updates on time. According to reports, the search giant is forcing its OEM partners to ensure that they release at least four security updates in a year with each update not differing by more than 90 days. The move is aimed to further strengthen the security aspect of Android devices and bring consistent user experience.
