When Samsung showed off it’s new Infinity Displays at its recent developer conference, it caught the fancy of the tech media quickly. Specifically speaking, the Infinity-O display. The new unique display would employ a camera-in-the-hole approach to get rid of the notch, and replacing it with an even smaller hole in the camera.
Now, this was the very first time we officially heard of such a display. Hence, it was believed that Samsung would have the first dibs on the in-screen camera display. However, a new teaser for an upcoming smartphone from Huawei has been released today, which hints that Huawei could snatch that opportunity from Samsung.
The released teaser hints at a key feature of the mystery device, and it doesn’t take rocket science to guess that it will have an in-screen camera drilled in a hole. Also, unlike notches the camera is placed on the top-left hand side to minimize distraction. Now, this is the first we’ve heard of Huawei working on a in-screen camera smartphone. However, Chinese media is now abuzz with rumors that not only Huawei, other big players will also be heading the Samsung route next year and the in-screen camera will be in trend next year.

With regards to the identity of the upcoming handset, there isn’t anything official, however, speculation suggests that the new handset could be the Nova 4, successor of the Nova 3. Some also suggest that it could be the Nova 3S. There’s a lot we don’t know about the alleged upcoming handset but looking at the Nova 3 spec-sheet we can make guesses.
The Huawei Nova 3, released in July, featured a Kirin 970 SoC making it a premium phone. Even Samsung’s Galaxy A8s which is thought to feature the Infinity-O Display is a premium device so it is understandable that the first wave of these displays will be on high-end smartphones. The launch takes place in December. Expect more details surrounding the handset to emerge in the coming days.
