Huawei Mate 20 Pro gets waterproof case with support for underwater camera mode

Huawei wants to turn its flagship smartphone, the Mate 20 Pro, into an underwater camera. In order to achieve such an extensibility for its flagship device, the Chinese smartphone maker has launched a new special waterproof case with support for underwater camera mode.

The new case is essentially a shell to turn the smartphone into an professional underwater camera, and is designed for being used in underwater activities like snorkelling. The new mod from Huawei is priced at RMB 599 (around Rs 6,300), and is now available for purchase from Vmall in China. The listing for the product, first reported by MyDrivers, shows that the new mod comes with professional grade waterproof rating with 5m/1h (max) dive. It will fulfill the needs of those professionals shooting under the water at a limited depth for an hour.

When connected to the mod, Huawei Mate 20 Pro will also support new “Under Water Camera Mod” and it will make operation more flexible. The camera feature uses Huawei’s proprietary intelligent image adjustment feature to optimize for quality and the user need not worry about the image quality shot with the mod.

In terms of design, the new mod from Huawei basically seems to be turning the Mate 20 Pro into a GoPro. The case has a design similar to that of GoPro shells and the listing claims that it is fully sealed with a raised button for easy operation under water. While Huawei Mate 20 Pro is IP68 water and splash resistant, the same is not applicable when used under continuous water. With the mod, Huawei Mate 20 Pro owners will be able to use that triple-camera setup under extreme scenario.

To recall, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro was launched at an event in London last month and has been launched in other markets as well. The smartphone is expected to launch in India this month, but Huawei has not shared the official launch date just yet. The smartphone builds on the design we first saw with the Huawei P20 Pro early this year, and goes for an edge-to-edge display with a notch at the top and in-display fingerprint sensor.

The Mate 20 Pro runs EMUI 9 based on Android Pie, and is backed by a 4,200mAh battery.

The smartphone supports fast wireless charging, and can also be used to wirelessly charge other smartphones using reverse charging. It also includes super fast wired charging via included 40W adapter. The Mate 20 Pro costs north of €1,000 (around Rs 83,200) in Europe.
