Given that the OnePlus 6T is just a few days old, it seems unimaginable that someone would want to take it apart already. But for the sake of fun videos like the one below, that’s exactly what some people are willing to do. A new video showcases a full teardown of the OnePlus 6T, going into particular detail with the in-display fingerprint sensor that is the big feature on the new phone.
The video comes courtesy of YouTuber JerryRigEverything, a popular channel dedicated to opening up electronics and giving viewers a better look inside. While the channel has already done previous videos on the OnePlus 6T, this particular video opens the phone up even further to look at the components around the in-display fingerprint sensor. The video shows that the in-display fingerprint sensor is essentially just a small camera that can capture an image of your fingerprint, with a sensor attached to create the image and authenticate your access to the phone.
An interesting point raised during the video explores the possibility of hiding even the selfie camera behind the AMOLED screen. Given that the sensor is itself a camera, this could be a theoretical possibility in the future, thus doing away with the idea of the notch and bezel altogether. However, the sensor on the OnePlus 6T can currently only scan when your finger is on the screen, meaning that it may be difficult for an embedded camera to take pictures of objects at a distance.
The video ends with the phone being put back together, after demonstrating that it is still functioning even without the sensor in place, and that light from the LEDs on the AMOLED screen don’t shine backwards. On the whole, the OnePlus 6T appears to be well put together, and much of the space that OnePlus claimed was freed by removing the 3.5mm jack has indeed been utilized.
