OnePlus not shutting down device seeding program for developers; to relaunch with changes

OnePlus has just issued a clarification that the company is not shutting down its device seeding program for developers. This comes just days after reports surfaced on the internet indicating that the company was planning to shut down the program. As previously reported, the company did not offer any reason for shutting down the program either. Hours after the initial reports though, the company has reached out to us with an official statement.

OnePlus has now confirmed that it is not shutting down the program. Instead, it has “temporarily scaled back” its “developer program”. The reason is because it is working on improving the program in future with updates to the developer selection criteria and the communication channels with the developers. The company claimed that these improvements are needed for better co-operation between the company, and developers who are part of the seeding program.

The company confirmed that it will restart the program and the company will also select developers based on the new criteria. OnePlus also added that it is working on providing “best possible support” to developers for “community development efforts for OnePlus devices”.

If the statement is anything to go by then it is a good move by the company to keep the seeding program alive. This will ensure that developers can easily develop custom ROMs and kernels while providing a number of options to the users. As previously mentioned, this will also help the company spot security flaws that may have slipped out in the open before they can cause any widespread harm.
