Oppo to unveil a foldable smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2019: Report

Earlier this month, a company named Royole unveiled the FlexPai, the world’s first foldable smartphone. Not long after that, Samsung teased its long-rumored Galaxy F foldable smartphone at its developer conference in San Francisco. It seems that flexible mobile devices are all the rage, as Oppo has now joined the fray as well.

In an interview with Dutch website Tweakers (as reported by Techradar), Oppo confirmed that its own foldable smartphone is well on the way.

As per report, Chuck Wang, Product Manager at Oppo, specifically said that Oppo’s foldable smartphone would be unveiled at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019.

Wang didn’t unveil the specifics about the device, or say anything on the launch. However, it is expected that Oppo may follow a similar roadmap as to Samsung. The company might announce or tease the device on stage at MWC 2019 but won’t make it available to the public for some time.

In the interview, it was further revealed that Oppo is also aiming to release a 5G phone in Europe, in the first half of 2019. There’s a smartphone with an in-screen camera in the works as well, but that likely won’t come out until 2020.

We already know that Huawei and LG have plans for their own foldable smartphones next year, and Samsung might shed more light on its Galaxy F smartphone at the same time as Oppo.

Showcased at SDC 2018, Samsung is calling its foldable display technology ‘Infinity Flex’ display. It allows a tablet-sized device to folded in the form of a regular candybar smartphone. ‘Infinity Flex’ appears to be the foundation for Samsung’s future smartphones, and even Google is working closely with the company to ensure that Android supports the new screen technology.
