Samsung quietly slipped in a new budget handset in the Indian market — Galaxy J4 Core. It is the beefed-up successor to the Galaxy J2 Core that made a debut in August. The real reason for launching another variant is best known to Samsung. Of course, there are differences at the hardware level, and both Core series phones run the Android Go Edition. Though the Galaxy J4 Core is the costlier one, we pit it against the Galaxy J2 Core to examine whether the differences are worth the extra money or not.
Pricing and Availability
Samsung is yet to reveal the price and availability of the Galaxy J4 Core. That said, the J4 Core is a successor with different hardware and is expected to cost about Rs 8,990. Meanwhile, the Galaxy J2 Core made its debut at Rs 6,190 in August and is available for less than that lately.
The Galaxy J4 Core packs a 6-inch display, 1GB of RAM, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset. It packs features such as Optimized Data Control and Ultra Data Saving for the phone buyers in the emerging markets. So far, there is no official word on the availability of the J4 Core in India. Meanwhile, the Galaxy J2 Core is already available at Flipkart.

Screen and Design
The Samsung Galaxy J4 Core arrives with a 6-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution of 720×1480 pixels. That’s a significant jump from the Galaxy J2 Core equips a 5-inch display with 540×960 pixel resolution. That makes the Galaxy J4 Core’s screen a bit more appealing and immersive. The phone is expected to arrive in Black, Gold, and Blue variants.
The Galaxy J4 Core again checks most of the boxes with neat candy-bar style design. The lack of a home button makes it a bit more modern compared to the J2 Core that has the Samsung branding on its chin. The new Galaxy J4 Core looks neat and still has a slight protrusion at the back for the camera lens. Other than that, the J4 Core does appear as the improvement over the J2 Core.
Processor and Battery
The Galaxy J4 Core packs the quad-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 mobile processor with Adreno 308 integrated GPU. Samsung packs 1GB of RAM and 16GB storage expandable with up to 512GB microSD card. On the other hand, the Galaxy J2 Core houses a quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos 7570 mobile chipset with 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage. You can expand the storage with up to 256GB microSD card.
Now the Snapdragon 425 chipset is based on the 28nm fabrication process compared to the 14nm process made the Exynos 7570. Samsung’s chip may have the energy efficiency advantage. However, the difference in the battery capacity might turn out to be the distinguishing factor.
The Galaxy J4 Core gains brownie points again in the battery department with a 3,300 mAh battery. The J2 Core packs a 2,600 mAh battery. Both phones lack fast charging support.
Cameras
Samsung Galaxy J2 Core flaunts an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash. Even the Galaxy J4 Core packs an 8-megapixel primary camera with LED flash and autofocus. Both phones are capable of recording 1080p videos. However, the J4 Core has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and the latter is absent in the J2 Core. That means you can count on the J4 Core to click decent selfies in the low-light situations.
Operating system and connectivity features
Both smartphones run the Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition) with Samsung’s Experience Home UI layered on top. There’s no official word on whether both or either of the phone will receive the Android 9.0 Pie upgrade. Technically, it should but owing to the hardware and the diversity in Samsung’s portfolio; it appears to be unlikely.
When it comes to connectivity, both phones support dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, micro USB 2.0, and USB On-The-Go. Only the Galaxy J4 Core offers Stereo FM Radio with recording facility.
