Samsung doesn’t really have a good track record when it comes to software upgrades, especially for mid-range smartphones. And this is despite the fact that the Galaxy J-series smartphones are the most sold, at least in India. Late last month, Samsung started rolling out a software update for the Galaxy J7 Prime that was launched two years ago. While that was an update with performance improvements and November 2018 security patch, the company is now rolling out Android Oreo update for the smartphone.
The move is commendable on Samsung’s part as the Galaxy J7 Prime was launched nearly two years ago with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box. According to screenshots shared by GSMArena, the update size is roughly 1GB, and it also brings Samsung Experience UI 9.5, similar to what we have seen on the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9+ to name a few.

The new software update brings plenty of UI improvements in Home Screen, Samsung Cloud, Smart View, and more. Audio codec support for AAC and Sony LDAC is also in tow. Other features and improvements include GIF tab in the keyboard, updated video player with 2x speed option, picture-in-picture mode, dual messenger options, Autofill API and Notification Dots feature.
As this is a phased rollout, it may take a while before the update reaches your device. And once it does, you’ll be notified about the same. If you want to manually force check for updates, you can head over to Settings -> Software Update -> Download Updates Manually.
