Samsung’s much-awaited foldable smartphone has been rumored for a long time now, and it’s certain that the device is not a myth. At the Samsung Developer Conference earlier this month, the chaebol showed off (although not in full) a prototype device with foldable screen, calling the latter an ‘Infinity Flex’ display. Not just that, Samsung has another developer event scheduled for November 20 in Seoul, South Korea, where the company is expected to shed more light on its foldable smartphone project. Now, some new information has surfaced online, and it all but confirms that Samsung’s foldable smartphones are here to stay.
According to a report on Yonhap News Agency, Samsung plans to release a foldable phone every year, which would sit alongside the existing Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. In fact, the company has patented new designs for the upcoming smartphone as well.
“We have overcome several obstacles, including making folding lines invisible. We only need to come up with the details of the user interface,” Dong-jin Koh, President of Samsung’s Mobile Communication business was quoted as saying in the Yonhap News Agency report.

Spotted by LetsGoDigital, these patent documents highlight folding devices with external displays. Also, as noted by Phone Arena, the two halves of the devices can also ‘slope’ towards the phone’s folding edges, creating a larger and seamless display. The patent schematics also highlight elements like ‘Hologram device’ and ‘Projector’ with reference to the display, although there’s no information (yet) as to what they are and how Samsung would implement them in its upcoming smartphone.
