Vodafone Rs 159 prepaid plan with 1GB daily data launched to take on Jio, Airtel

Vodafone India has launched a new prepaid plan for select users, priced at Rs 159. The plan offers 1GB of daily data usage, and up to 250 minutes of voice calls per day (subject to secondary limits of 1,000 minutes per week and a maximum of 100 unique mobile numbers dialed), and 100 SMS per day. The Vodafone plan is valid for 28 days, and takes on similarly priced plans from Airtel and Reliance Jio.

The plan, first reported on by TelecomTalk, is being positioned to take on similar offerings from Airtel and Reliance Jio. The key competition is from Jio, which has an open market plan with similar benefits. The Rs 149 plan from Jio offers 28 days of validity with 1.5GB per day, fully unlimited voice calling across India, and 100 SMS per day. Of late, mobile operators have been struggling to keep up with the competitiveness of Jio’s plans, largely because of the higher costs being offset by the older operators.

In this case, Vodafone has implemented FUP caps on voice calls to prevent the plan from being used for spam and marketing purposes. The plan is only available to select users, and is meant for personal use cases. Vodafone has stepped up its efforts after it dropped a position to third in India in regards to number of users. Jio has been rapidly adding new users with its ease of use and setup, well-priced plans and high-speed data access.

While Vodafone has a strong position in urban circles, Jio and Airtel have a hold over the rural subscriber base. However, Vodafone and Idea Cellular merged earlier this year to form a single corporate entity, and while the two brands are still being operated separately, there has been a consolidation of resources and infrastructure.
