Xiaomi teases MIUI 12 by ending development of MIUI 11: What to expect

Xiaomi is set to introduce MIUI 12, the next version of its custom skin based on Android. The Chinese smartphone maker has issued an announcement which suggests the release of MIUI 12 update. Xiaomi has confirmed that it will stop MIUI 11 developer ROM starting next week. The official development team of MIUI shared a message informing users that this week is the last week of updates for the MIUI 11. This could mean only one thing: the development of MIUI 12 is starting soon.

Xiaomi releases MIUI as a custom skin based on the Android mobile operating system. The MIUI 11 is already based on Android 10, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. The MIUI 12 might also be based on Android 10 since Google is yet to push Android 11 to Android Open Source Project. However, it might soon jump to Android 11 as well. It is, however, still not clear whether the Coronavirus outbreak has affected the development of MIUI 12.

Earlier, Xiaomi faced issues with MIUI 11 development and it even had issues with Android 10 update for Mi A3. Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro, Mi 10 and even the Mi 10 Pro had issues due to incomplete testing of the MIUI 11. The Redmi Note 8 also faced issues with the release of MIUI 11. This delay primarily affected Xiaomi customers in China and seems to have been caused by Coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown.

According to GizChina, when Xiaomi users try to participate in the beta release, it shows “Not found, participating in MIUI 12 will be a good choice”. This could also mean that the next version is ready for testing. We might see Xiaomi release the beta version in China in the coming weeks. Xiaomi had released MIUI 10 and MIUI 11 around May so MIUI 12 coming out in April cannot be ruled out. The alleged features include improved system-wide dark mode, new graphical user interface (GUI), upgrade to Android 11 and multiple clone app support.

There are reports claiming that Xiaomi is looking to support no less than 40 models for the MIUI 12 release. We should see the company further polish its custom skin for Android. It needs to be seen whether Xiaomi gets rid of questionable content promoted by its services. With MIUI 11 development reaching an end, Xiaomi could surprise the Android would with another incremental update.
