Xiaomi MIUI 12, the successor to MIUI 11, has been under development for some time now. It is expected to become available in beta form in the coming weeks. While we have heard rumors and key changes coming to the platform, the details have scant. Until now. The Chinese smartphone maker may have accidentally leaked the first images of the upcoming MIUI 12. The leaked images originate via the beta version of the Mi Settings app.
Like most app developers, Xiaomi also rolls out beta versions of its apps via the MIUI Community forums. The new beta version to hit the site is that of Mi Settings app in the form of an APK. Interestingly, this new APK came with a revamped user interface. XDA Developers forum member was sharp enough to notice the change and immediately took screenshots. Xiaomi has since pulled down the APK but it just confirms that the UI is meant for MIUI 12.
Xiaomi MIUI 12: Is this a big update?
The biggest change coming with MIUI 12 is support for a new refresh rate menu. Earlier, there was a list with two options of either 60Hz or 120Hz. Now, the interface has been refreshed to give an illustrative menu. The screen time week view has also been updated to offer a graphical interface instead of bars. The leaked screenshots confirm that we are looking at a very early interface of MIUI 12. The final version might well be different or polished from what seen in these leaked screenshots.
The MIUI 12 is expected to become official available during the third quarter of this year. Xiaomi stopped the development of MIUI 11 beta to pave way for this new version. The key focus seems to be to further minimize the clutter and offer a streamlined experience. An executive behind MIUI development has even confirmed that the company is working on unifying the font. The company is looking to unify the status bar and system font.
Ahead of the launch later this year, four new features of the UI were also spotted. Xiaomi has not had a clear track record with software. While MIUI 11 went after minimal design and user interface. The overall software was plagued by bugs and ads that spoiled the experience. With MIUI 12, Xiaomi has an opportunity to redeem itself. With a long list of compatible devices, the MIUI 12 could become one of the biggest updates yet.
