Cyberpunk 2077: Save files more than 8MB getting corrupted for PC gamers

The troubles for Cyberpunk 2077 don’t seem to be ending anytime soon as the infamous multi-platform game has run into yet another problem for PC gamers. According to a Techradar report, players are encountering an error while trying to save a game where the save game file is more than 8MB in size.

Xbox and PlayStation users have not reported a similar issue but it seems to have plagued the PC and Stadia ecosystem.

What is the issue?

Tom’s Hardware spotted that save games larger than 8MB were encountering errors and it’s mostly affecting players who have ventured into the crafting side of the game in Cyberpunk 2077. Since players are crafting too many items the save game is becoming larger in size which has been the primary reason for the issue.

The complaints about the PC issues surfaced on CD Projekt’s own forum via Reddit where users posted screenshots of the error they ran into. After digging around and comparing multiple posts conclusion could be drawn that the error was popping up due to the oversized save game file.

PC users beware

If you have been playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PC there will come a time when you run into this error. If you are affected by this bug, you will see an error pop up on your screen that reads “Saved data is damaged and cannot be loaded.”

There are also chances that you will experience longer loading times for the game that will involve a black screen coming for 30 seconds every time to try to load the game. If this is happening with you, consider that you save game memory is about to cross that threshold of 8MB and you will encounter the error.

Is there a fix?

While the developer is reportedly aware of the problem it hasn’t issued any official statement on the same nor has released a fix. A moderator in the CD Projekt forum has suggested a fix but it’s only a temporary solution. Game distribution platform GOG.com has also acknowledged the problem and is suggesting players an alternate solution. As per GOG.com: “Unfortunately the save is damaged and can’t be recovered. Please use an older save file to continue playing and try to keep a lower amount of items and crafting materials.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is riddled with bugs and people have taken to public platforms to report the issue. The situation got so much out of control for CD Projekt Red, the game’s developers, that it had to remove the game from the PlayStation Store citing problems.
