There has been a recent surge in the use of the Dark Theme in apps that have been introduced by Google and one of the major reasons has just become clear. The new Android Material Theme design from Google usually has a bright white background that causes a lot of strain on the eyes of the users in the dark. And with Dark Mode on the new Amoled panels that actually turn off the pixels in the dark, a lot of battery is saved.
For those that are still not familiar with how the new Dark Mode looks on the apps by Google, it usually inverts the colors which means that the black text becomes white and the white background becomes a dark grey. And now Google has confirmed these thoughts at the Android Developers’ Summit that was held this week.
Google explained to the developers present at the conference how Dark Mode saves energy and presented a chart. According to the chart presented by Google, when YouTube runs in the Dark Mode at 50 percent screen brightness, it consumes 14 percent less charge than when on normal mode. At 100 percent screen brightness, Dark Mode consumes 60 percent less battery.

Google also mentioned that in the normal mode a screenshot taken from Google Maps consumes 250mAh of battery on the Amoled Pixel display which compares to the 230mAh on the Apple iPhone 7 that uses an LCD Display. But when compared in Dark mode the power consumption of Pixel drops by 63 percent to 92mAh. Amoled displays don’t use backlighting like LCD displays hence have lower usage of power. Google has somehow made up for the excessive use of whites in the Material Theme design with the Dark Mode.
