Oppo R19 tipped to feature MediaTek’s yet-to-launch Helio P80 next year in first half

Last week, we first heard about MediaTek’s Helio P80 chipset which is rumored to launch some time in December or early January. MediaTek hasn’t said anything about it yet, but during the Helio P70 launch, it did hint that a more powerful chipset is coming before the end of the year.

While it’s still early days for alleged MediaTek Helio P80, a report by Taiwan Business Times (via GizmoChina) suggests that Oppo R19 will be the first smartphone to come with this yet-to-launch MediaTek chipset in the first half of next year.

The Oppo and MediaTek have had collaboration for R series since R15, which was launched with Helio P60. But later for the R17 series, Oppo incorporated Qualcomm’s chipsets.

As per report, MediaTek has reportedly strengthen its processor performance and the Helio P80 will be MediaTek’s main product for the first half of 2019. The chipset is said to be based on the same process as TSMC’s 12nm FinFET for Helio P70, but the architecture will reportedly be upgraded.

The Helio P80 was listed by AI benchmark app alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8150 lasy week, where MediaTek’s chipset was at number two after Qualcomm.

The performance ranking by the AI benchmark app runs nine computer vision-related AI tasks across a variety of neural networks. The Helio P80 in its development stage was in second place, hitting a score of 19,453, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8150 was slightly ahead with a score of 22,082 points. It even edged out Huawei’s flagship Kirin 980-based Mate 20 Pro (12,026), which was at fourth position after OnePlus 6 (12,274).
