It is official. Xiaomi is bringing the Mi 10i as its first smartphone launch in 2021 to India, based on the recent Twitter post from the brand’s official channel. The teaser reveals a quad-camera phone featuring a 108-megapixel main sensor, which is a direct hint at the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G that launched in China a few weeks ago. Xiaomi hasn’t revealed more details, apart from the fact that it is launching January 5 via an online Livestream event.
Rumors of the Mi 10i launching in India came a few weeks ago when tipster Mukul Sharma leaked certification documents regarding the handset. The Mi 10i is said to be a renamed Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G from the Chinese market. However, it is completely different from the Redmi Note 9 Pro that you get in India. The Mi 10i will be a 5G phone and borrow some of the highlight features from the Mi 10T Pro flagship – a phone that won us over with its camera performance.

The Mi 10i will be a new kind of offering from Xiaomi, theoretically replacing the aging Redmi K20 from 2019. Nobody knows what pricing could Xiaomi opt for but our guesses are around the Rs 20,000 mark, challenging the recently launched Moto G 5G. The Mi 10i will be a 5G compatible smartphone, thanks to its Snapdragon 750G chipset, if it is based on the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G from China.

Based on that theory, we can also expect the Mi 10i to feature a 120Hz IPS LCD display with 1080p resolution, a premium design, a big enough 5820mAh battery, and 33W fast charging system. However, the main area of interest will be the 108-megapixel main camera, which is unheard of in the sub-Rs 30,000 category. The device is expected to feature a quad-camera system, with the other three cameras quite similar to the one you could find on the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max.
The Mi 10i will be the third device under the Mi category ever since the Mi 10 5G launched this summer. Xiaomi followed it up with the Mi 10T series that offered almost 80 percent of the same features at a slightly reduced price tag. Earlier in 2020, Xiaomi revealed its plans use the Mi sub-brand as an umbrella for launching premium devices with high-end specifications.
The Mi 10i should aim for the premium midrangers in India, such as the Moto G 5G, Vivo V20, and the OnePlus Nord. The Mi 10i will have an upper hand with its 108-megapixel camera system, something which this segment lacks.
